  1. Now that ICD's are being retired Canvas is the new solution for instructor-entered course descriptions. It would be fantastic to get the custom descriptions along with the rest of the data about the course.

  2. ASTRA would like to get all of it's student application related Span of Control values out of SWS so that the DTS job that pulls span of control values from SDB can be retired. The only SOC type that is being retrieved from SDB that is not available in SWS is "Major".

  3. Add Budget information from BGT database to the Financial web service. This would provide data on current award amounts by account code.

  4. Expand the current function of r25 (or like service) to not only be able to host classroom data, but any available space on campus. Provide a Web Service so that current space seeking apps could hook into it. Also have a interface that building coordinators could access that eliminates the need for every building to have a separate booking app.

  5. We're preparing the paperwork to request FWS authorization for one of our applications. Relative to other UW services, it's a fairly rigorous process, considering we only want org code and org name data, neither of which seems to be of a sensitive nature.

Since we're trying to follow best practices in terms of not re-using already approved certs across multiple applications, I anticipate we'll have to go through the approval process at least a few times.

It would be nice if we could self-regulate in exchange for a less rigorous authorization process - i.e. don't let us see sensitive stuff,…

We definitely recognize this is a real problem. We plan on working with the FWS data stewards to see if we can develop a lighter weight process for certain resources.

  6. MyUW Mobile would like GWS to make
    uw-affiliation-undergrad-current,
uw-affiliation-extension-student-current available in the UW Affiliation Groups.

  8. I have code that is generic enough that others could use it, but there isn't a place to share code.

A sourceforge/launchpad/codeplex-like area (hosted by UW or just a special tag for UW Web Services projects at either site) would be great. A forum would allow for knowledge capture, collaboration, and deduplication of efforts.

  9. This would save us from having to manually download expenditure transactions from MyFinancial.Desktop.

Perhaps this effort could also expose other MyFD functions under web services, such as reconciliation.

  11. There are a number of attributes -- particularly for student resources -- that depend on business logic that isn't well-defined across campus. The most famous example of this is GPA, which must be calculated based on a number of different fields, taking into account a number of caveats about different types of courses, etc. To make matters worse, the business logic that defines this calculation is not well-documented (as far as I know) and results in potentially different results in different applications that may or may not properly calculate the GPA using the same rules of the registrar's office. Whenever…

  13. The Groups Web Service provisioner could source its data from SWS if:
o The section search resource accepted a timestamp, and returned only those sections which had been modified since that timestamp
o The section resource returned a system timestamp
o The registration resource optionally returned StudentNbr or UWNetId instead of RegId

  14. This service would be usable by the Groups Web Service provisioner for maintaining organizational groups. Given a budget number, we'd need the EIN's of employees whose current (active, inactive) apptDeptBudgetNbr matches. Or whose HomeDeptBudgetNbr matches. Or whose DistBudgetNbr matches. Or whose (Appt, Home, Dist) budget nbr is in a particular Org Code.

  15. It would be useful to have an API which exposes the required / optional material lists for courses. The basics would be books titles, isbn, and if they are required or not. Currently this information is not available at all through the UW, and must be retrieved from the U Bookstore (which is an independent entity).

  16. Nearly all of the possible ways to search or filter the data returned by the r25 web service don't seem to work.
For example, example 6 from http://knowledge25.collegenet.com/display/WSW/spaces.xml
    would be:
    http://r25web.admin.washington.edu/r25ws/servlet/wrd/run/spaces.xml?range_start=N&range_end=P

But all I get back is "The custom error module does not recognize this error."

  17. We do a few things based on SLN, and if you query section info too soon the SLN's are 0000.

What I'm doing now is making sure I don't query courses based on the relevant terms "registrationservicesstart" via the Term resource, which is more than a month after SNL availability noted here http://depts.washington.edu/registra/staffFaculty/calendars/tscal1011.php. This solution is a little hacky and I would love something more integrated.

We will talk to the data owners to figure out if/when this info is available.

  20. Provide a web service that allows access to the UW Online Work/Leave System (OWLS) data for employee schedules and available leave time.
Currently OWLS is a read only web interface for UW employees, forcing departments to implement their own systems for employees to request and get approval for leave time. This means that departments either have a cumbersome wasteful paper based system, or they implement a web based system where the schedule for every employee must be manually added into the system.
